NBMCA offering free plants and planting to shoreline and stream bank properties to help protect water quality

(North Bay, May 8, 2017) Shoreline and stream bank property owners in local watersheds can help protect water quality by taking part in a free shoreline planting program offered by the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA).

Next Source Protection Authority Board will be meeting Wedensday, March 22 at 6:30pm.

A creek on the north end of Callander’s Centennial Park is getting on overhaul that will help improve water quality and fish habitat by reducing erosion and controlling the flow of sand and sediment into Callander Bay.

Septic systems within 120 metres of a watercourse that flows within the Callander-Wasi watershed are being inspected by the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority to help protect water quality.

“These visual inspections will help identify any faulty septic systems,” said Robert Palin, Manager of NBMCA’s On-Site Sewage Program. “Faulty systems may contribute phosphorus to creeks, streams, rivers and lakes.”

Chair of the North Bay-Mattawa Drinking Water Source Protection Committee (SPC) Jeff Celentano, has been reappointed for a three-year term by the Ontario Minister of the Environment and Climate Change (MOECC).

The North Bay-Mattawa Source Protection Committee meets Monday, September 12, 2016 at 9 am at the NBMCA offices, 15 Janey Ave., North Bay, ON.  The meeting is open to the public.

Two signs have been posted in Mattawa on Bissett Street and Brydges Street to mark the entrance to the vulnerable areas.

Residents will notice new “Drinking Water Protection Zone” signs on Trout Lake Road and other roads across the region.

The North Bay-Mattawa Source Protection Authority will meet on January 27, 2015 at 7:00pm in the Natural Classroom at 15 Janey Ave., North Bay.

Youth Rangers help NBMCA with shoreline plantings for Restore Your Shore

The next phase of North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority’s Restore Your Shore program kicked off with the help of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry’s (MNRF) North Bay District Stewardship Youth Ranger (SYR) team planting 225 trees, shrubs and perennials along 20 metres of Callander Bay.

Online Consultation for Changes to Municipal Zoning

The Source Protection Plan requires some municipalities to make changes to zoning bylaws and official plans.  The public has an opportunity to comment on the proposed changes in a variety of ways, including online comments.

Restore Your Shore Project for Callander Bay-Wasi Watershed

(North Bay, April 30, 2015) Shoreline and stream bank property owners in the Callander Bay-Wasi watershed can take part in a free shoreline planting program whose ultimate goal is to help prevent the growth of blue green algae in the watershed.

The Callander-Wasi watershed flows through the municipalities of Callander, Chisholm, East Ferris, North Bay and Powassan who are working together, with the help of the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA), to prevent phosphorus from entering the waterways.

North Bay, March 5, 2015 Policies Now In Place To Protect Municipal Drinking Water Sources In Five Municipalities

The North Bay-Mattawa Source Protection Plan was granted approval by the province today, putting in place policies to protect the drinking water sources of Callander, Mattawa, North Bay, Powassan and South River from significant threats identified through the source protection planning process.

February 10, 2015 A Professional Planning Consultant is required

to assist municipalities in the implementation of the North Bay-Mattawa Source Protection Plan.  Deadline for submission is Feb 19, 2015.  Such assistance relates to Official Plan Amendments and Zoning Bylaws for seven (7) affected municipalities.    View the Request for Quotation here.

February 5, 2014. New Municipal Representative Needed for SPC.

The Source Protection Committee (SPC) has a vacancy for a municipal representative due to the death of one of the SPC members. Municipalities are invited to submit nominations for a replacement. The deadline for nominations is March 13, 2015 and must include an Application completed by the nominee and a letter from the municipality acknowledging its support for the applicant.

DECEMBER 20, 2014 SPC Member George Onley has passed away: The Source Protection Committee is saddened to announce the passing of SPC member George Onley on Dec 20, 2014.
