Ontario Drinking Water Stewardship Program

The Ministry of the Environment, through the Ontario Drinking Water Stewardship Program (ODWSP) provided financial assistance for voluntary measures that protected municipal drinking water sources.

The funds were delivered in the North Bay-Mattawa Source Protection Area by NBMCA through the 2010 Early Action Program and the 2011 Early Response Program. One well was decommissioned under the scope of the program.  As well, land owners, farmers, and businesses whose aging or faulty sewage systems could potentially impact municipal drinking water sources in vulnerable areas identified by the Source Protection Committee, had the opportunity to apply for financial support to repair or replace those systems.

Applications were considered on a first come, first serve basis.  Approved applications received up to 80% of the eligible project costs.  The grant ceiling varied from $7,000 for a conventional system to $15,000 for an advanced treatment system.

A total of $284,000 was granted in the North Bay-Mattawa Source Protection Area during the term of the Drinking Water Stewardship Project in the Village of Trout Creek as well as those properties which have a septic system located within 120 metres of a waterway within the Callander Bay subwatershed, including the Wasi River and Wasi Lake.
